Tramore Teen Clay Club: A Hangout Space for Teenagers to Find Calm Through Pottery

Check out the latest blog from Tramore Pottery
where Trish writes about how she started her own pottery journey and the benefits for a teenagers development of a regular pottery class.
My Own Teen Pottery Story
Once a week, when I was a teenager, I’d attend pottery classes after school. The lady who ran them had a wonderful low-demand attitude towards it: she would show us how to make things work, but otherwise give us a lot of freedom to carry out our own ideas. Memories of those carefree afternoons sitting around a long table, making things with my hands and chatting with my friends still rank amongst my happiest nearly thirty years later. It wasn’t so much about the pottery (although I am still at it, so it clearly stuck!) but about having a safe space where the only expectation from us was to enjoy ourselves, with no deadlines, exams, or competition.
The Pressures Facing Irish Teens Today
Much has changed since then and for many Irish teens these low-pressure moments of focus and calm are rare. According to the 2024 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Trends Report for Ireland, nearly 50% of teenagers report feeling low every week (up from 25% in 1998) with girls more affected than boys. Uncertainty and the relentless demands of social media on their attention, and academic pressure weigh heavy on our young people. (Source)
“Art can be a healthy outlet for your emotions… Sometimes the act of learning a new craft or practicing a craft I already know (like pottery, painting, sewing)… it quiets my brain and sensory issues completely. It’s like the only time I feel at peace.”
The HBSC shows a sharp decline in life satisfaction amongst young people in Ireland. Less than a third of girls report feeling “very happy” about life and problems such as stress-related headaches, anxiety, and broken sleep patterns are on the rise.
Why Teens Need More Than Sport
Not far, in Kerry, a recent survey found that teens want more friendly spaces to socialise safely. And in South Dublin, 90% of people said they’d choose casual hangout zones over more sports facilities. Teens are telling us what they need, and in many cases it is not more sports facilities.
“Unless you’re in sport, there’s little for teens to do.”
While we are spoiled in Tramore (and in Ireland at large) with the offerings for kids who are into sports, from hurling, to rugby, to surf and many more, there is still a gap to close when it comes to safe, creative spaces.
If you’re searching for creative activities for teenagers in Waterford, pottery is a unique and calming option that supports wellbeing and self-expression.

The Benefits of Pottery for Teen Wellbeing
Shaping clay with your hands is not just an art form but a shortcut to feeling good, which is why our pottery classes for teens in Tramore could be just what your teen is looking for.
- Scientifically proven benefits: Studies have shown that clay therapy can reduce biological indicators of anxiety and depression in teenagers and adults; a 2023 randomized trial of high-school-aged girls in Hong Kong found that subjects who created clay works with their hands had reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol in their hair.
- Mindfulness without trying: The act of shaping clay pulls attention into the moment, increasing focus and a state of flow, something that many teenagers crave in our over-fragmented days. As a bonus, having your hands muddied is a powerful deterrent against picking up your phone.
-
- Non-verbal expression: Pottery offers a safe way to process feelings without needing to talk about them.
- Tangible accomplishments: The concrete, solid and smooth results that come out of the kiln are a powerful counterpoint to the constant grind of academic demand.
- Resilience through imperfection: We potters often say that clay has a mind of its own. There are many ways in which things can go, not quite wrong, but certainly different to what we hoped for. This forces you to let go of any expectations of perfection and learn to keep an open mind. And this is a powerful life lesson to take outside the pottery class.
These wellbeing benefits of pottery make it much more than a hobby—it’s a tool for seeking calm and personal growth.
Real Stories from the Pottery Studio
“Pottery has helped my anxiety immensely and really helped reduce my intrusive thoughts. It’s very meditative.” — Reddit user
I found pottery at a pretty low point in my life… Turns out it was the best dang decision I’ve done so far and I’m still going with it nearly 7 years later.”
These aren’t just happy accidents—they’re consistent themes. Whether it’s building focus, sparking joy, or offering a sense of peace, pottery has a track record of helping people manage stress.
Why This Matters in Tramore
Tramore is a town of energy and movement—surfboards, seaside amusements, and very fast hurling. But for many local teens, the question remains: Where do we go when we want something creative, calm, and indoors?
At Tramore Pottery, we endeavour to provide local teens with a relaxed space where they can forge new friendships over clay. Participating in a common activity takes the pressure off social interaction, allowing teens to engage as much or as little as they want. And by standing alongside them as facilitators rather than teachers, we can offer gentle direction without increasing the demands put on them.
